Unlike this highly unusual football season that ended yesterday, politics is not a sport and those who practice it as a zero-sum contest shouldn’t be allowed to play.

Examples are hard to find but, here in Texas, there’s a long history of leaders in the legislature “managing the middle” to ensure the wing nuts remain on the fringe.

There’s still lots of work to do — and a lot on the line in a redistricting year — but newly minted Republican Speaker Phelan has been carrying on the tradition and is being recognized publicly for it by Democrat State Representative Gina Hinojosa.

I believe progress should be recognized when we see it. What are you seeing that I should know more about?
